Microchipping

Ensure Your Pet’s Safe Return with Microchipping
Microchipping is very important and is a legal requirement in NSW. A microchip is about the size of a small grain of rice and is injected under your pet’s skin, usually in between their shoulder blades, behind their neck. This procedure can be done during a normal consultation.
The microchip contains a set of numbers that are unique to your pet and is the most effective form of permanent identification. This code is placed onto a statewide computer database called the NSW Pet Registry, and it is particularly very useful in the return of lost pets. There is also a national database available. Microchips can also assist in cases where the ownership of an animal is in dispute.
You will be set up with an ‘account’ on the registry where your pet’s microchip and your contact details will be recorded. It is very important to note that if you move address or change your contact details, these must also be updated on your account on the pet registry.
If a pet is ever lost and is handed into a veterinary clinic or animal shelter a microchip scanner is passed over the animal to reveal their unique microchip number. The vet or animal shelter can then refer to the Pet Registry database to identify the name, address and phone number of the owner, so they can be reunited.
If your pet does not have a microchip, please give us a call to make an appointment to have your pet receive one.
If you find a lost pet please call us to arrange to bring them in to our hospital so that we can scan their microchip, and hopefully reunite them with their worried owners.
